Edward Johnston (1872–1944) designed the Foundational hand inspired by the strong geometric letter forms of the 10th century manuscript “The Ramsey Psalter”. Johnston was a British calligrapher, type designer, and educator. Along with Rudolf Kock (1876–1934) from Germany, Johnston is considered the father of modern broad edge calligraphy.

Two Speedball C2 Broad Edge Nibs and one C3 (Right- or Left-Handed)
Large Dinky Dips, 4 Jar Rectangle: Wooden holder with screw top jars

Watercolor palette set, like Prang. We will be using Yasutomo Niji Aquarelle Watercolor Set 36 Colors in class. This will only be used during class and will be returned to me after class.
Gouache or Watercolor in a tube. Miranda will have an assortment of colors for you to pick one and add to a dinky dip jar above.
One round brush, #4 or #6.
Container for water to rinse your brush.
Kneaded Eraser
Straight Edge or Ruler
Paper towels, handkerchief, bandana, or an old shirt: If you decide to use a handkerchief, bandana, or old shirt please ensure that it is lint-free. If it is not lint-free, tiny hairs can get caught on the nib and in the ink/paint.
Dropper Bottle for Distilled Water: If you take wellness tinctures they usually come in glass dropper bottles. The bottles can be reused for art!
Distilled Water
Stir sticks: for ink and paint. For my studio, I use stainless steel stir sticks. Wooden popsicle sticks are used for classes.
Blotter Paper, newspaper, newsprint, additional marker paper, hot press watercolor paper, or leather to place under your writing paper.
1 sheet of colored paper (not white, cream is okay), not too bright, to act as a guard sheet.
Removable Tape. Purchase online at Staples or Amazon. If you have a tape dispenser, check the size (width of tape) before ordering. Removable tape comes in 1", 3/4", and 1/2".
Desiccant to keep with the nibs to wick away moisture and to prevent rust. These can be found in new shoe boxes, purses, wallets, hats, etc.
Container for nibs. Any container with a lid will do! Empty Altoids tins work great.
A tray, similar in size to a small butcher tray, to place your towel and dinky dip holder on. If there is a spill, it is contained in the tray and makes for very easy clean up.
Mechanical pencil or wooden pencil and sharpener: Any pencil will do. If you have a mechanical pencil use that and skip the pencil sharpening!
An old, or inexpensive new, toothbrush (rectangular/oval shape) for cleaning nibs. Circular electric toothbrush heads will not work.
A cushion, pillow, or rolled beach towel to sit on for proper height and posture.
*Students that purchase the kit will receive enough in a dinky dip jar for class and to practice a few days at home.
Students who chose to bring their own supplies must bring the full list as the instructor will not have extras.
Please note that there are no refunds for classes but transferable upon request.
