90-minute LIVE online class with Miranda Fuller

Traditional Chinese brush painting artists seek to capture the spirit of nature. The technique encourages imagination and asks you to paint what you want to see, not what you actually see. Each paint stroke is created with love, intention, and purpose.

You will learn about the materials used in class, Chinese painting, and the wide variety of strokes that you can achieve with one brush!

This technique is not only for stand alone paintings, but also for creating beautiful cards, envelopes, gift tags, gift wrap, bookmarks…the options are endless.

Digital handouts with step-by-step instruction will be provided.

A welcome email containing a link to download the handouts and virtual WebEx classroom information will be sent to students after registration.

Class Supply List

1. Brush options:

• Ruby Satin Pointed Triangle Brush, Medium. Available at Jerry’s Artarama Nashville and Paper & Ink Arts.

• SoHo #6 Wedge Brush only available at Jerry’s Artarama Nashville.

2. One round brush, size 4, 6, or 8

3. Gouache or watercolor. There are two options. Choose your adventure!

• BEGINNER — Pan Set: Any set you have or like. Miranda will be using the Niji Yasutomo Aquarelle Watercolors for class, available at Paper & Ink Arts. Most of the colors are opaque and look lovely on dark papers.

• INTERMEDIATE/ADVANCED — Tubes: red, blue, yellow, black, white — M. Graham & Co. Gouache, Individual Colors: Napthol Red, Phthalocyanine Blue, Azo Yellow, Ivory Black, Titanium White; OR Holbein Artists’ Gouache 15ml, Primary Colors Set of 5

4. Palette with at least 10 deep wells for mixing tubes of paint. NOTE: if you are using a pan set that has a lid, like the Niji Yasutomo Aquarelle Watercolors, you may skip this and mix the paint in the lid.

5. Hot Press Watercolor Paper

6. Scissors (optional, if you don’t want to hand-tear your paper)

7. Bone Folder (optional, for creasing paper)

8. Dropper bottle filled with water. A straw can be used in a pinch, or reuse a supplement or essential oil glass dropper (must have a separate dropper that twists off).

9. Two to three pint-size water containers (jelly jar size) for washing the brush

10. Paper towels, handkerchief, or old t-shirt for blotting and cleaning

11. Something to lay underneath your paper while painting: an old sheet, old white or gray t-shirt, newspaper, large paper bag, or blotter paper.

2. Niji Pearlescent Watercolors. These colors are super fun and delicate on light papers, and pop on dark papers!

3. Molly Marbles Watercolors. Gorgeous handmade artist watercolors made in Nashville by Molly Margaret. Supplies are limited so make sure you sign-up for her mailing list!

4. “The Chinese Brush Painting Bible” by Jane Dwight. This book is a wonderful resource.

5. Soft, felt-like painting mat. Felt mats are nice because they are washable and reusable. An old blanket or an old, folded top sheet works great! There are a few options available online or you can purchase a yard from a local fabric store. Just make sure it is washable.
