Abstract calligraphy involves using text to create textures. It can be emotional and freeing, minimal or complex, illegible or legible. The writing and marks vary from quick and spontaneous to slow and meditative. In this class, we will create an abstract calligraphic painting with objects found in nature or the home. Using found objects expands your creativity and artistic possibilities! We will discover the marks that each object makes and develop alphabets using various pressures, rhythms and stroke directions. We will also explore the use of combining the objects with traditional tools such as brushes and squirt bottles.

Students are asked to bring text that is meaningful to them. It can be a song lyric, poem or quote. The text will be written several ways using the found objects and traditional tools. For the final painting, we will create a colorful background with fluid acrylics and layer the alphabets while writing your text and creating your own unique textures. 

Students will leave with one finished painting and several starters to continue their exploration at home.
